Modern concertgoers are accustomed to hearing overtures performed as the first selection on a band or orchestra program. However, this album is an entire collection of overture transcriptions! Overtures fall into several categories, with the most popular being the opera overture. Overtures, recorded by The United States Air Force Band, is a collection of 19th century overtures as part of a continuing series of great transcriptions. The album includes many classic and recognizable overtures like “Fra Diavolo”, “Mignon” and “Donna Diana”. Several of the works on this recording were transcribed by The Band’s own master arrangers, CMSgt. Lawrence Odom and CMSgt Leigh Steiger. The music you hear on this album is a result of openhanded scoring for wind instruments, yielding outstanding transcriptions for band. Although it is just a small sampling of The Air Force Band’s talents, Overtures is a solid reminder of why the band has become known as one of the greatest bands in the world!
