Collection: Poets of the Great War

Collection: Poets of the Great War

CD

The truth untold, The pity of war, the pity war distilled...’ Here are the extraordinary writings of a generation who fought through a war of unprecedented destructive power, and who had to find new voices to express the horror of what they discovered. The great names – Owen, Sassoon – are fully represented, but there are also many poems by lesser-known or unexpected figures, ranging from serving soldiers like Isaac Rosenberg and Richard Aldington to women such as Edith Nesbit and Vera Brittain. The poems are arranged by theme to give a sense of how the writers’ feelings and attitudes evolved.

Reviews:

"The readers are not restricted to each poet and indeed one of the more moving moments is Sarah Woodward’s interpretation of [Wilfred] Owen’s 'Futility.' From Rupert Brooke’s winsome opener 'The Soldier' to Laurence Binyon’s final, unforgettable 'For the Fallen,' this is still a stunning way to remember a war that has now passed from memory into history." – Time Out, April 1997

"Out of the bloody chaos of the Somme came wonderful poetry, some well-known, others less so. Here is a fine selection, splendidly read." – The Good Book Guide Magazine, September 1997

"This is an extensive collection: 62 poems by not only the ‘greats’ like Sassoon, Owen, and Brooke, but less familiar voices. The reading is magnificent throughout and the historical and emotional flow is enriched by diving the poems into sections (Anticipation, The Trenches, Protest, etc.)." – Robert Cooper, The Spectator, March 1997
