We'll Keep the Home Fires Burning

When hostilities began in 1914, there were of course no war songs as such. In their absence, soldiers, as well as those they left behind, took over existing Music Hall favourites: sentimental ballads like "There's a Long Trail A-Winding" and novelty numbers like "Tipperary," together with the occasional survival from earlier wars, such as "Goodbye, Dolly Gray." The songs written by the soldiers themselves told a different and more interesting story. This unique collection covers the full range of songs associated with the two major wars of the 20th Century, as sung by a chorus of soldiers from today's army. Whether they evoke sympathy, patriotism, or nostalgia, these songs remain a poweful document of terrible conflict.
