The nine overtures featured on this recording span 164 years: eight were composed in a period of 78 years, and the ninth followed 86 years later. While these statistics may seem trivial, the birth order and relative proximity is essential to understanding these overtures and the cultures that produced them. On Overtures Vol. 2, comparison becomes inevitable regarding each of the seven composers. All of these composers, including Leonard Bernstein and Ambroise Thomas, helped define 19th century music and, for 12 years, were all alive at the same time. Recorded by the United States Marine Band and directed by Colonel John R. Bourgeois, this album is a virtual history lesson in the realm of great music. The album includes such wonderful works as “Overture to Candide”, “Overture to Fra Diavolo” and “Overture to Light Cavalry”. Audiences today enjoy overtures due to their native charm and familiarity, and Overtures Vol. 2 is an explicit devotion to this sentiment.
