This album is part of a series of recordings honoring the lives and music of individuals who have made significant contributions to big band jazz. The Legacy of Stan Kenton honors a man who was well known for his accomplishments as a composer, arranger, music director, and manager. Kenton combined his twentieth century classical music studies with jazz to produce music that provoked criticism for its loudness, dissonance and unsuitability for dancing- a music that coined the term "progressive jazz". The Jazz Ambassadors of the United States Army Field Band recorded this album in December 1994 at Devers Hall in Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Representing some of the finest musical talent in America, The Jazz Ambassadors are the United States Army's premier touring jazz orchestra. The Legacy of Stan Kenton features some of Kenton's greatest works including "Opus in Pastels" and his arrangements of songs like "Walkin' Shoes". Honoring the memory and innumerable musical contributions of Stan Kenton, this album is both inspiring and captivating.
